Network



Network refers to a group of devices (such as computers, servers, printers, routers, and switches) that are connected together to share resources, exchange information, and communicate with each other. Networks can be classified based on their size and geographical location.

Local Area Network (LAN): A LAN is a network that is confined to a small geographic area such as an office building, school, or home. The devices in a LAN are typically connected using wired or wireless technology, and they can share resources such as files, printers, and internet access.

Wide Area Network (WAN): A WAN is a network that spans a larger geographic area, such as a city, country, or even the world. WANs are typically made up of multiple interconnected LANs, and they use technologies such as the internet, satellite links, and leased lines to connect devices in different locations.

Wireless Network: A wireless network is a type of LAN that uses radio waves to connect devices without the need for physical cables. Wireless networks are commonly used in homes, offices, and public spaces such as airports and cafes.

Network Topology: The physical layout of a network is known as its topology. Common network topologies include:

  1. Bus topology: all devices are connected to a single cable, which acts as a backbone for the network.

  2. Star topology: all devices are connected to a central hub or switch, which manages the traffic on the network.

  3. Mesh topology: all devices are connected to each other in a network of interconnected nodes.

  4. Ring topology: all devices are connected in a loop, with each device connected to two others.

Network Protocols: In order for devices on a network to communicate with each other, they must use a common set of rules and procedures, known as protocols. Common network protocols include TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and DNS.

Security: Network security is a critical concern, and a range of measures are used to protect networks from unauthorized access and attacks. These measures include firewalls, encryption, virtual private networks (VPNs), and intrusion detection systems (IDS).
